For a while during the war, Burghley provided a temporary home to a group of Belgian officers fleeing their country. The house was then converted to a Class B Convalescent Hospital for wounded soldiers. Around 450 men were treated for a wide range of illnesses – from gunshot wounds to trench foot and shell shock - staying usually between four to six weeks as the last part of their treatment. The Marquess was fighting in Egypt and at home the Marchioness took an active role in the war effort.
